Holy Trinity Church History
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church has always been a church that grows. Through every change in the course of the church’s short history, God’s faithfulness and provision have been abundantly clear.
In the early 2000s, the Lutheran churches in Utah began working together toward the dream of planting a church in Riverton, UT. Rev. Merlyn Wagner of Christ Lutheran Church in Murray, UT, led the process. In June 2008, Rev. Alan Borcher accepted the call to serve as pastor of this new church, Light of the Valley Lutheran Church.
On January 25, 2009, Light of the Valley Lutheran Church held its charter service. Members of LCMS churches across Utah attended and gave their support. Pastor Borcher was installed, and 39 people signed the charter, becoming the first members of Light of the Valley Lutheran Church. At first, the church operated in a warehouse. Even amid those humble beginnings, there were big plans.
January 2011 brought two big transitions: a new location and a new name. The church began partnering with Salt Lake Lutheran High School and moved to a facility originally named “The Garden Lodge,” and Pastor Borcher served as chaplain for the high school. In conjunction with the move, the church’s name was changed to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and the high school’s name became Concordia Preparatory School.
In 2012, the church opened Concordia Learning Center, an early childhood development center. Susan Walker signed on as the director for the 6 children enrolled.
The next year was a time of transition. In June 2013, Concordia Preparatory School was forced to close due to financial difficulties, and Holy Trinity needed a new space. That September, Hope Lutheran Church (ELS) agreed to allow Holy Trinity to use its space while Holy Trinity searched for a new location. Just one month later, in October, a purchase agreement was made for property for Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Concordia Learning Center at 13249 S. Redwood Road in Riverton.
Ground broke on this new property in April of 2014, and on March 27, 2015—Good Friday— Holy Trinity Lutheran Church held its first Divine Service in its new space. That fall, Holy Trinity Lutheran School (now Concordia Lutheran Elementary) began operation with kindergarten.
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church has grown to have over 300 baptized members. As of 2022, 71 children (infants–4th grade) were enrolled in the learning center and school.
The church, learning center, and school continue to grow because of God’s marvelous gifts. With these gifts and His continued blessings, in 2024, a new sanctuary and new classrooms for our school were completed.
